About CYTOPATHNET
This electronic information center provides practical, streamlined access to information on the Internet about the field of cytopathology. It is most useful to cytotechnology students and cytotechnologists, cytopathologists, pathologists, and pathology residents. Physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, other healthcare professionals and/or organizations, and patients will also find some useful information. Our goal is to improve the quality and image of the field of cytopathology, and to educate women about the importance of yearly cervical cancer screening. Hopefully, by providing an avenue for colleagues to share their experiences and knowledge on a variety of topics, and by improving our communication with each other, we will encourage our intellectual and professional growth, which will ultimately improve the quality of care we render to our patients.
Jana C. Sullinger, MD Founder/Creator and Former President/CEO CYTOPATHNET®
CYTOPATHNET® had its beginnings in the latter part of 1995 when I first began exploring the internet. In my search to find information about cytopathology on the internet at that time, what I found was that it was essentially non-existent. I used CYTOPATHNET® as a personal online desktop reference to access what information I was able to find regarding regulations, items of interest, and pathology sites that proved useful in my daily life as a practicing pathologist. At that time, none of the professional societies had an online presence. I quickly found that many individuals were coming to my site out of the same need that had prompted its origin, and I quickly gained a following. Alexander Meisels, MD was an early supporter, and has provided much moral support and encouragement over the years, as well as Editorials. Based on his early support, I began to contact professional organizations to provide them an online presence on CYTOPATHNET®. The ASCT hosted their newsletters on CYTOPATHNET® until they had their own online presence. Pat Connelly, MD provided much editorial assistance and images in the early years of CYTOPATHNET®, and Sandra Fite, CT(ASCT) contributed the very popular CLIA Forum, which she continues to host. Gary Gill CT(ASCT) and Dennis Williams (FIBMS) have provided occasional input as well over the years. The CYTOPATHNET-L Listserver was a very popular email list, and was the first of its kind before a malicious virus attack a couple of years ago. It is again operational and available to our users worldwide.
CYTOPATHNET® existed as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, effective date of 12/24/97-12/01/06. The decision was made to return to our original roots as a grassroots level site under the concept of an open-source concept, and the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike? License. This site was donated by and is designed and maintained by Dr. Jana Sullinger. The site has received some charitable contributions received from its patrons over the years, but is primarily maintained financially by Dr. Jana Sullinger. Significant editorial assistance and contributions of microscopic images have been submitted by Dr's. Alexander Meisels and Patrick Connelly and the remainder of the editorial/advisory staff. The design and intent of this site is for educational purposes only.
